A business bank account in Georgia: how to open one
A company in Georgia is registered in a day; the bank account takes weeks. The reason is not bureaucracy: banks run their own client review, and for companies with foreign founders it goes noticeably deeper.
What to prepare
- the registry extract and the company charter;
- passports of the founders and the director;
- documents confirming the address;
- a description of the activity: what the company does and where the money comes from;
- contracts with key counterparties, if you already have them.
That last item is not always formally required, but it is the one that most often decides the outcome. The bank needs to understand the source of funds and the economic sense of the transactions.
How it goes
Filing and the meeting
The director usually has to attend in person. At the meeting you are asked about the business: who the clients are, in which countries, what turnover is expected, how settlements work.
Compliance
The documents then go to the compliance team. This is the longest stage and its duration cannot be predicted: from a few days to several weeks depending on the ownership structure and the activity profile.
What the account gives you
- multi-currency: accounts in several currencies at one bank;
- international transfers;
- online banking and corporate cards;
- integration with accounting for exporting transactions.
If you are refused
A refusal is not explained, and does not have to be. The practical conclusion: do not treat opening an account as a formality or plan a launch with no slack. Build in a margin on timing and be ready to approach another bank.
What improves the odds: a clear and consistent ownership structure, a coherent description of the activity, real contracts, and a readiness to answer questions about the origin of funds.
Common mistakes
- operations planned to start before the account is open;
- the activity described in generalities;
- an ownership structure tangled without a business reason;
- personal and corporate money mixed from the first months.
We support account opening: we help assemble the package, prepare the activity description and work through the compliance questions.
